Los Alamos Public Schools uses a process defined in board policy #6140 to create and facilitate the work of Curriculum Committees for each textbook adoption cycle. These committees are comprised of the Curriculum Director, subject area teachers, parents, and community members. For all involved, this is very valuable work, for which we are extremely grateful. If
you have been involved in Curriculum Committees in the past, you
remember that we have only used one year to research best practices,
align our standards, and select texts to meet those standards. We are making a change to this practice. We are adopting a 2 Year Cycle for Text Selection:
Year 1 will include:
- professional development in curriculum planning
- research on best practices
- examination of school district data and comparisons to our benchmarked schools
- development of entry & exit criteria for vertical alignment
- research into 21stCentury skills connected to learning in this discipline
- development of pacing guides, which identify end learning masteries & essential questions
Year II will include:
- attendance at the Textbook Caravan in Santa Fe. The Public Education Department (PED) provides this single day venue for all adopted textbook vendors to present their texts to decision-making teams
- use of the rubrics to evaluate texts
- use of the sample texts in classrooms between October & January
- decision on texts in January in order to comply with textbook ordering deadlines
As parents and community members you would be expected to:
- attend 1 meeting per month, (August - May) for Year I & participate in the activities. In Year II, the meetings will only last until January. These meetings run from 3:45-5:30 p.m.on Thursday or Monday afternoons, depending on the committee.
- make recommendations at every step of the process
- be a liaison between the schools and the community having to do with curriculum development
For School Year 2007-8, the following Curriculum Committees will begin:
- Career and Technical Education: Years I & II
- English Language Arts 9-12: Year I
- Foreign and Classical Languages: Year I
