First Game Report- The 7th and 8th grade girl's baketball team played their first game on Thursday. They traveled to Santa Fe to play the Ortiz Hornets. Unfortunately both teams were defeated by the Hornets. In the 7th grade game the final score was 13 - 15. It was a very low scoring game and the Hawks had the lead going into the fourth quarter, but could not hold off the hot handed Hornets. The Hawks ran into a tough full court press but were able to handle the Hornets for the most part. The Hawks only scored two points in the scond half and that was done by Jessica Heironimus who finished with six points. The only other Hawk to get in the scoring column was Amber Logan with a game high of seven points. This was definitely a learning experience for the girls.
In the 8th grade game. The game was definitely exciting. It went into overtime and girls were fouling out left and right. It came down to the final buzzer, but the Hawks were unable to get it off in time to win the game. The final score was 31 - 33. The Hawks got off to a sluggish start. At half time the score was 12 - 13. The ball would just not fall for the Hawks. Just couldn't buy a basket. Unfortunately they were also held scoreless in the final overtime period. The Hawks played a tough man to man defense and tried to press the Hornets but it just wasn't enough. Stephanie Blair and Hayley Each were both high scorers with nine points each. Other scorers were Kiana Zer with three points, Kristen Funsten and Alison Crane each had two points, and Mckenzie Logan chipped in one point. The Hawks have their next game at their place against a tough Santa Fe School. Please come out and support the Hawks.
Espanola-The Los Alamos 7th and 8th grade girl's basketball team traveled to Espanola Thursday to take on the Sundevils. In the 7th grade game, the Hawks lost by a score of 32 - 16. At half time, the Hawks were only down by nine points and playing a tough 1 - 2 - 2 zone defense but were unable to keep the pesky Sundevils off the boards. Unfortunately for the Hawks they were held scoreless in the third quarter, but they rallied in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Sundevils. That just wasn't enough for the Hawks. The Hawks had a few more people get into the scoring column. Amber Logan was the game's high scorer with six points. Dominique Hills had four points while Sarah Stubben, Jessica Heironimus, and Emily Orr each scored two points. The girls are really improving with every game.
In the eighth grade game, it was really exciting to watch this time. The Hawks came to play. They played aggressive in their defense and took the ball hard to the basket. Everyone contributed to this game even the players coming off the bench. The Hawks did lose by a score of 20 - 18 which was heart breaking. If only the Hawks could have converted some free throws it might have made a difference. The Hawks were up in the first half by a score of 12 - 7 unfortunately they lost the lead in the last fifteen seconds of the third quarter. The Hawks were able to get more people in the scoring column. Alison Crane, Kiana Zerr, and Hayley Each all had four points. Kaitlyn Lemke, Kristen Paulson, McKenzie Logan, and Elena Atencio chipped in two points. The Hawks will play their next game away in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Las Vegas-The Los Alamos 7th and 8th grade girls basketball team traveled to take on the West Las Vegas Lady Gents. The 7th grade had a rough outing. They started off with eight quick points but then the Lady Gents put a full court press and the Hawks fell apart. When the Hawks were able to get the ball down the floor they had good looks at the basket. The Hawks need to work on their rebounding both offensively and defensively. The Hawks lost by a score of 13 - 38. The game's high scorer was Amber Logan with 8 points. Jessica Heironimus had 3 points. Other scorers were Mariah Armijo with 2 points and Breanna Sehorn chipped in 2 points.
The 8th grade finally got a "W" in the win column. It was nice to get that monkey off our back. The ball was finally going in and the Hawks were not afraid to take the ball to the basket. The Hawks took the lead in the first half and never let go. They were able to outscore the Lady Gents every quarter. The Hawks were able to run their offense and see the post players underneath the basket. At half time the score was 23 - 6 and the Hawks were able to outscore the Lady Gents in every quarter. The game's high scorer was Hayley Each with 9 points followed by McKenzie Logan with 7 points. Other scorers were Kristen Paulson with 6 points, Krysta Salazar and Marissa Larribas each had 4 points. Elena Atencio had 3 points while Kiana Zerr and Alison Crane each had 2 points. Ashley Owens chipped in one point.
LA Tournament- Coach Brewer and I would like to take this time to thank all of you who donated food, money, and time to this tournament. It was great. We both know that it was rough splitting the teams in half but we both feel that all the girls benefited from doing this. The girls gained valuable game experience which was really needed.
