Welcome to the Los Alamos Middle School Physical Education.  The Physical Education teachers are Susan Hammock and Daren Jones.  We hope to make Physical Education a fun experience for your student.

Uniforms/Locks-For PE class, the student will need a PE uniform that has their name written on the shirt and shorts.  A lock and locker will be issued to the students the second or third day of class.  The students are responsible for the lock.  If the lock is lost then the student will have to pay for that lock.

Grading- Our grades are based on participation, skills test, written test, and fitness.  The fitness tests come from the Presidential Physical Fitness Tests.  They are the Shuttle Run, V-Sit and Reach, Mile Run, Sit-ups, and Pull-ups.  You may take a look at their website for more information http://www.presidentschallenge.org/. The skills test and written test are given after a unit for example in Ultimate Frisbee the skills test would be over the throws and catches.  Participation is worth the most points.  The students need to try everything.  They need to put effort into the game that is being played (not standing there watching the ball go by), and effort in jogging.  The students cannot earn extra points but only lose points.  They will lose points by not being to class on time, inappropriate behavior, lack of participation, and not having their supplies for class.

TriFit Program- Coach Jones and are excited about trying this new piece of technology on some of our classes.  The TriFit program allows the teachers and students to keep better records of the students target heart rate zones during activities.  Hopefully this will help the student to see what they have to do to become more physically fit.  This will also teach them what they have to do to stay within their target heart rate zone.  This program also has a lot of features that will help the teachers become more efficient at record keeping.  We are looking forward to sharing this new program with your student.  You are welcome to take a look at this website to look at exactly what this program is doing for your student and class at http://education.polarusa.com/education/Products/trifit/models/trifitsoftware.asp.

Coach Jones and I also ask that the students have a pair of good tennis shoes.  No skater shoes are allowed.  The reason for this is because there is no arch support in there and they don’t tie the shoes.  We will be jogging every day so they need a good pair of shoes to help their feet and knees.

Coach Jones and I will be updating our website frequently but if you have any questions please feel free to contact us by phone or by e-mail.
