September 2010

Dear Parents,

My name is Dorothy Martinez the English Language Learner,  Spanish 1A and Cultural Languages teacher.  It has been a busy summer and a time of reflection for the 2010-2011 school  year.   My continued English  Language Learner assignment at Mountain Elementary School is in the morning, and I will  be at Los Alamos Middle School in the afternoon.

This letter is to introduce myself and relay the goals are to:

  • Implement a positive instructional environment
  • Display and reinforce an effective classroom management program
  • Communicate a clearly defined grading system
  • Establish and maintain positive rapport with my students
  • Create an educational program that will meet students' academic needs

First of all, it will be a delightful surprise to have your children as my students and will note their willingness to learn as well as the high standard of performance that you have apparently instilled in them.  I appreciate your efforts in the establishment of their academic focus.  This reinforces my professional goals and reinforces the joy my teaching career has brought me.

Secondly, I am providing information about homework, assignments, and suggestions for students' successful academic performance.  The students will be asked to write down assignments in their agendas on a weekly and daily basis, take a pretest on the vocabulary that will be studied and applied in that week's lesson.  In addition, the telephone messages will include this information and messages may be left for my attention.  I will respond to them in 24 hours or in a timely manner.

Note:  ELL and Spanish 1A consists of learning vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. during class time.  Therefore, the only homework students will be studying weekly vocabulary for spelling tests on Friday as well as completing any incomplete daily assignments. My suggestion for consistent language exposure is studying vocabulary from pretest and review daily notes for 15 or 20 minutes every night.

For Cultural Languages, students will preview:

  •      Four languages (Spanish, French, German, and Italian)
  •      The Geography where that particular language is spoken
  •      Coloring a flag of some country
  •      Some greetings and conversation in that language
  •      Agriculture and Foods
  •      Architecture and special places to see in the countries
  •      Authentic dress or customs

Hopefully, when students visit these countries they will observe and remember what they learned through readings, presentations, and videos.  I hope this will become a lasting adventure for my students.

If I can be of any assistance, please feel free to contact me at m.martinez@laschool.net or contact me by phone at 663-2422.  This joint effort will serve to enhance the quality of service for your child's education.

Sincerely yours,

Ms. Dorothy Martinez
