GySgt Painter is the son of former Marine Corporal Robert Painter and his wife of 53 years Sharon Painter. GySgt Painter was born in Phoenix, Arizona on the 25th of June 1965 and enlisted in the Marine Corps on April 3rd 1983. Upon completion of recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Ca in June of 1983, he was assigned to Naval Aviation Maintenance Training Group 90 at Naval Air Station Millington Tennessee where he was assigned the MOS 6143, Airframes Structural Mechanic. Upon completion of MOS school he was assigned to Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadron 363, Marine Aircraft Group 16, MCAS Tustin, Ca, 3rd Marine Air Wing. While serving as a CH-53A/D structures mechanic he was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal and Corporal. He was also assigned the billet of Collateral Duty Inspector and participated in two unit deployments to Okinawa, Japan.
In April of 1987 Corporal Painter entered the Selective Marine Corps Reserve to attend college at Northern Arizona University. In July of 1990 he asked to be re-enlisted back on to active duty and his request was granted.
In August of 1990 Lance Corporal Painter deployed with Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadron 466 in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Upon his return Corporal Painter was transferred to HMH-361 where he worked as the night crew supervisor and collateral duty inspector for his work center. In 1993 he deployed to Okinawa, Japan and served with the 31st MEU aboard the Bellow Wood. After returning to CONUS in 1994 he was assigned temporarily to MAG-16 Headquarters and worked as the Classified Material Custodian for MAG-16 and was promoted to Sergeant in July of 1994.
In July of 1995 Sgt Painter received orders to Recruiters School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego Ca. Upon completion of Recruiter School he was assigned to Recruiting Station, Salt Lake City, Utah, 12th Marine Corps District where he was named the Quality Recruiter of the Year in 1996 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant in March of 1998.
In July of 1999 after a successful tour on recruiting duty, Staff Sergeant Painter transferred back to the Fleet Marine Force and back to HMH-361. While with 361 Staff Sergeant Painter served as the Airframes SNCOIC, Airframes Division Chief, Quality Assurance Representative and the Squadron Gunnery Sergeant. He was nominated twice to meritorious Gunnery Sergeant and deployed twice, once again, to Okinawa Japan. He was promoted to his present grade in August of 2003.
Gunnery Sergeant Painter has served as an Instructor and Chief Instructor for the Career Course and left the Marine Corps as the Operations Chief for Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Academy aboard Camp Pendleton. GySgt Painter is married to the former Justine Watson and has two children, his son, (former) Marine Corporal Joshua Painter (24) and his daughter Shea (15). GySgt Painter has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University and his personal decorations include the Meritorious Achievement Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star, and the Good Conduct Medal with Silver Star.
